Keep the County Clean Challenge
The annual Mayors’ Keep the County Clean Challenge, is a week-long community clean-up event held each spring in celebration of Earth Day. Residents across Northumberland County come together to collect litter from public spaces—parks, trails, roadsides, and more—in a friendly competition that fosters civic pride and environmental stewardship. Last year, over 2,400 volunteers removed more than 19,000 kilograms of waste, demonstrating the power of collective action. Participation is free, and all ages are welcome to help keep our community clean and green. Stay tuned for registration details and event dates as Earth Day approaches.
Northumberland County offers supports to increase the accessibility for recycling and waste programs:
- Accessible Recycling Collection Program - Residents with disabilities that prevent them from using a blue or grey box can apply to continue to set their recycling out in bags. Please note, that if approved, sorting materials is still required.
- Medical Waste Subsidy - If you create large amounts of medical waste due to a medical condition, you may apply for a garbage bag-tag subsidy. If approved, you will receive a set number of free bag-tags per year to help you with the disposal of your medical waste. For more information, please refer to our Medical Waste Subsidy Policy.
