History and Heritage

On Friday January 22, 2021 Cramahe Township lost a historical, and beautiful, building at 5 Toronto Street. Known for many years as The Golden Rooster. Heritage Cramahe have prepared a Building Obituary for the Golden Rooster  to appreciate the history of what has been lost.

Founded by Vermont Empire Loyalists in 1792, there is a rich history here in Cramahe Township!

The beautiful Village of Colborne, with a distinctive main square laid out in the original plan for the village in the late 1790's and a main street that was featured in Ron Brown's "Downtown Ontario: Unusual Main Streets to Explore."

Nestled throughout Cramahe Township are rolling hills, orchards and farms where you can pick your own produce as well as shop for antiques and crafts.  For the outdoor enthusiast, you will find campgrounds, riding stables, fishing and boating as well as nature trails to enjoy!  Our quaint Village is filled with unique Vintage Stores, cafes, restaurants and places to explore.

Ten minutes north you will find the hamlet of Castleton which boasts one of the longest, continually run general stores in Canada and a popular spot for ice cream in the summer.  Even further north you will find one of the few remaining remnants of tall grass prairie in Ontario both at the Red Cloud Cemetery and the Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area.

The Big Apple Theme Park, north of the Village of Colborne in Cramahe Township is perhaps best known for one of this area's greatest tourist spots.  Here, at the home of Northumberland County's biggest apple, you'll find a bakery that makes some of the yummiest pies, cakes and tarts around. There is a petting zoo, mini-golf, a children's playground and a nature trail.
