Cobourg, ON – June 8, 2023 – Northumberland County, Northumberland County Housing Corporation (NCHC), and Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) are pleased to announce a partnership to make more supportive housing units available in Northumberland. In December 2021, Northumberland County purchased a former bed and breakfast at 152 Cockburn Street in Campbellford using provincial Social Services Relief Fund (SSRF) funding. The County renovated the five-bedroom property with plans to engage a community agency to deliver supportive housing. Today, the County is pleased to confirm that CMHA HKPR will be providing supportive housing services at this location, improving livability in our community. “We are very pleased to be partnering with CMHA HKPR to provide affordable housing, along with the necessary support systems to help individuals maintain their tenancy,” states Warden Mandy Martin. “The County continues to assess new opportunities—from construction, to purchase, to partnerships—to sustain and increase affordable housing options for our community. CMHA is a knowledgeable partner, with extensive experience delivering 325 supportive housing units in eight different locations across the four counties in which they operate. Together, we will help more Northumberland residents looking for a home to feel safe, supported, and part of the community.” Supportive housing refers to a combination of affordable housing and supportive services designed to help individuals thrive and achieve independence. Services offered can vary based on the specific needs of the tenants, but commonly include case management, health and wellness supports, life skills training, and social supports. By combining affordable housing with comprehensive support services, supportive housing programs aim to improve overall quality of life, increase self-sufficiency, and reduce the risk of homelessness among vulnerable populations. The acquisition of this property is part of Northumberland County’s ongoing efforts to address the current housing crisis by ensuring a diverse range of affordability and housing types to support the needs of all residents. Using provincial SSRF funding, the County purchased this property for $575,000 and invested an additional $500,000 in renovations and repairs to transition the building from a bed and breakfast to a residence. The property was then transferred to NCHC to incorporate into its portfolio of community and affordable housing. NCHC will lease the space to CMHA HKPR, who will manage program delivery. This includes selecting tenants based on criteria including community of residence (Northumberland), housing and support needs, fit with available programming, and readiness for a communal living environment. NCHC and CMHA HKPR will work collaboratively with Northumberland County to ensure this program is integrated with community system planning for housing and homelessness. “NCHC is excited by this opportunity to further diversify our housing stock.
